Why am I passionate about this?

When I finally accepted that I’m analytical, it was surprisingly liberating. I think that’s why I enjoy trying to figure out a story and its characters and what will happen next. Because of this, it’s delightful when a story genuinely surprises me. I especially appreciate magical elements that defy reality. I’m also a motivational speaker and filmmaker, two powerful story-telling mediums, so I love books that inspire me in some way, challenge my perspectives, and leave me thinking about them for days. When a book is so well written that I can turn off my brain and lose myself in the story, it’s a fabulous escape for me.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of The Midnight Library

Robin Jay Why did I love this book?

I loved this book because of the imaginative premise, particularly blurring the lines between reality and fantasy and the possibility of alternate lives.

Being analytical, the thought that certain decisions could have such a profound effect on our lives was intriguing and entertaining. I thought about some of my own decisions and how things might have turned out if I’d had the chance to go back and make different choices.

The suspense of this book had me reading fast, anxious to see what would happen next, and excited to see how it would end. I also loved how it focused on what makes life worth living and how we often get off track of those things that matter most.

I saw what happened to my family after losing my mother and wondered what mom would say or do differently if she could have seen us and manipulated events from beyond!

Book cover of There Are No Rules for This

Robin Jay Why did I love this book?

I was first attracted to this book because it begins with a suicide. I have written about suicide, so I’m interested in how others view it and how it can be used as a catalyst to drive a story.

In this case, a dear friend’s suicide becomes pivotal to the evolution and development of the other three main characters. Whenever someone ends their life, those left behind begin to question everything and often suffer from feelings of guilt. This book shows how the other characters coped, moving forward, along with fabulous, colorful memories from when the four friends were together.

I love that it made me laugh and cry. I found myself wishing that I had three dear friends like the ladies in this story.

People like Feeney Simms don't commit suicide. Beautiful, charismatic, mother of two, wife to a handsome, successful husband, beloved by her friends-this is not the typical picture of a tortured soul. But one summer night, Feeney drives to the beach and swallows a handful of pills. No note, no explanation, nothing. Like that, she's gone.

Faced with this loss, Ali, Max, and Liddy, Feeney's closest friends, are left reeling, grappling with the devastating cocktail of grief, guilt, and anger that's left in the wake of a suicide. In a desperate attempt to avoid further loss, the three women make the…

Book cover of Never Lie

Robin Jay Why did I love this book?

I was curious to see why Frieda McFadden was such a popular author, so I read this book. The story sounded intriguing. It turned out to be a really fun, really fast read.

I was drawn in by the characters and completely lost myself in the story. I tried to figure out what was going on, but I didn’t stand a chance because of the great writing and unexpected ending. I know authors may tend to deflect or shield their guiltiest characters from suspicion along the way, so I look for that in any story. Still, this book managed to surprise me.

I am looking forward to reading another book from McFadden, and I already have one in my shopping cart.

Book cover of The Family Across the Street

Robin Jay Why did I love this book?

I love an intriguing premise and an unexpected twist. This book promised both, and it really delivered!

I think we are all curious about what goes on behind the closed doors of our neighbors, though the truth is usually incredibly mundane…especially when compared to this story! From the first page to the last, I couldn’t put down this psychological thriller.

Because I love a tale of great suspense, I find myself growing impatient whenever a story starts to peter out without any satisfying resolution. That was not the case with this book. It delivered great, well-developed characters and an unexpected ending. Bravo!
